We got to know a little more about Jodie, what inspired her to start this business, and her plans for the future! Read Jodie’s essay on her business below:
I started my journey of entrepreneurship in 1995 shortly after having my first son.
I was a new mama working in the medical field in Maryland and missed my baby so much that I sought out a way to be at home with him and earn an income. What did I do? I opened a home daycare! Being home allowed me time to find other things I was passionate about… particularly decorating. My mother owned a thriving sewing business in North Carolina, and I, inspired by what she was doing, followed in her footsteps.
My current job description is Drapery Fabricator/Furniture Artist/Decorator. I will beautify your home! My days are spent making 2 story panels, cornice boards, and valances, shopping for one of a kind vintage furniture pieces to makeover for clients and giving home owners a strategic plan to make their home feel like them.
My diversity in the design industry makes me unique. I am skilled in many aspects and also have a willingness to inspire, teach and empower others.
Our family moved to Katy in September of 2016. The community here is fabulous! They truly support small business… I’m busy with a steady work load with most of my clients within 10 minutes radius of my house. As a rule now, I don’t travel more than 30 minutes for a job. That’s winning! Time is valuable.
Katy has taught me that relocating and replanting yourself is whatever you make of it. Opportunity is always there. Dig your heels in and go for it.
If I could go back and tell the me before I was a business something, I would tell her, “ You are on the right track. Follow the things you are passionate about. “ Your passion is your calling.
For anyone wanting to start a business, DO IT! Don’t overthink it. Look straight ahead. Don’t compete with others. If your business is on social media, be authentic and show people who you are as a person. You are your brand… potential clients want to connect with the real, genuine, transparent YOU.
When things get hard I remind myself that we all face challenges. I look for the lessons in them, readjust and keep going. I’m tough!
My future plans for my business are to get involved in more groups and find networking opportunities. I’m looking for my Katy tribe of entrepreneurs. I am the proud mother of three boys: Kyle, Special Forces Recruit; Jordon, College student and barista; and Ryan, my baby, currently at basic trading and headed to the 75th Ranger Regiment.
