Small Business Saturday: Redline Athletics | Katy Moms
Small Business Saturday, featuring Redline Athletics

Redline Athletics motto is, train like a pro. And that was exactly Jonathan Hutchinson and Shane Allen’s inspiration behind opening this business in Katy, offering a fully functioning training facility to all ages, where athletes can train to be their best.
Redline Athletics is a athletic training facility specializing in developing youth athletes into complete athletes. Focusing on the the fundamentals of strength and conditioning, their coaches will design a program to take each athlete’s game to the next level. By mixing sport science and clinical application, they can work with all sports, ages and abilities. Their semi-private classes incorporate speed, power and core exercises to elevate each athlete and build a competitive atmosphere in each class. They offer team training and mobile training, where their coaches can come to you or your practice.
Jonathan & Shane, both part owners, opened their doors in July 2017 and are focused on training youth to high school athletes, but also offer adult classes, yoga and more.
We sat down with Jonathan to learn more about their business, which we think all moms with kids in sports need to know about!

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in Katy?

Born and raised in Houston, TX. I went to high school in Magnolia and have lived in Katy going on two years.

When did the wheels start spinning to open Redline Athletics and have you always been passionate about helping youth in sports?

The idea of owning a sports related business has been something I have dreamed of since high school. It was not until I was 26 when the idea was put into action.

Tell us about your business and what was the inspiration behind starting it?

Sports, fitness and health have always been very important to me. As an ex-athlete, I have always wanted to share my experiences in sports and life with others. Since college, I have been training athletes at the collegiate levels, but wanted a way I could make an impact at the youth level.

What did you do before opening this business?

I was a Fitness Director and Performance Coach with ClubCorp at Kingwood Country Club for 3 years. Previously, I have worked for the USGA, PGA, and with the UH Baseball Team.

Have you always been entrepreneurial minded?

Yes. I started my first company when I was 16. It was a landscaping and tree removal service. We were seeking extra money during the summer and found out we were pretty good at it. This business endeavor was short lived.

What makes Redline Athletics unique in the industry?

I think we have a few different characteristics that make us unique in the industry.
Our class schedule is unique in that we do not require appointments and give you the option to choose which class to join. Our sport specific training allows us to train a plethora of sports and guarantees that we will have program for your athlete. Lastly, our atmosphere & coaching is hands down the best in Katy. They do a great job of creating a positive atmosphere that is inviting for youth and adult members.

Besides a training facility for youth, what else do you offer?

We offer a wide array of services. Besides training for youth athletes, we work with collegiate and professional athletes of multiple sports. We offer Adult training classes; ranging from High-Intensity training, strength, or stretching classes. We have two yoga instructors on staff that provide classes for every population. We also have three batting cages, a volleyball/basketball court, and outdoor multipurpose field for rental or birthday parties.

What’s your favorite thing about being a business owner in Katy?

I love the sense of pride you get by being a business in Katy. The city is very supportive to local companies and we want to work hard in order to make the city proud. Katy is a huge sports community and we want to be a part of it.

How has the Katy area community had an impact on your business?

The City of Katy has been very supportive since the day we opened. We have made so many wonderful friends and have met so many great people that believe in what we do. I could not ask for a better community to be surrounded by.

What’s one thing you’d like to go back and tell the you before you were a business owner?

I would tell my old self to stay positive. As a young business owner, a lot of the situations you deal with are new. Some situations may seem overwhelming and impossible, but I cannot lose faith. Opening this business has been hard and I have to constantly remind myself to continue working hard, stay positive and everything will fall in place.

Advice for anyone wanting to start their own business?

Make sure that you have a plan of action. Many businesses die because there is no plan in place. Surround yourself around intelligent and hard-working people that believe in the plan. Having a great team around me has not only allowed our business to grow, but also has alleviated some of the stress placed on an owner.

When things get hard, what’s one thing you tell yourself to keep going when running a business?

I remind myself that I am in a career that I love. Many people do not have the same happiness when going to work every day. I am very thankful for this.

How do you balance everything that comes along with owning your own business?

There are always surprises that I cannot control, but I try and focus on those things that I can control. I am still learning every day on how to handle life and its challenges, but I can say that no situation is to big. Day to day, I create a list of to-do’s to help me stay on track and focused.

Who inspires you most in business? Is it a person, a book you turn to?

My dad. After working for a company for many years, he was let go as the business failed. He then started his own company and is still up and running to this day. As a kid, I did not see the hardships and dedication my dad put into his business. As I grew older, I started to understand why he was constantly working towards building his company. It is that same work ethic that I take to business every day. If it were not for the many examples that he has given and still gives then I would not be here today.

Future plans for your business?

We are working on expanding the building to add two additional batting cages and more training space. We will continue to offer the best athletic training in Katy, as well as becoming more and more matted into this great community. We do plan on opening additional facilities around Katy and surrounding areas.
