Some of the most rewarding Meet A Mom features we get to do are the ones who truly leave a mark on us and touch our hearts in one way or another. It’s usually the moms who we just connect with, right from the start. And it’s almost always the mom who is fiercely passionate about being a mama, as well as over the moon passionate about her craft and something she does outside of being a mother. And Jessica Wang, wife, mama, and owner of Serene Wax Boutique is all of these things.
We first connected with Jess on social media, admiring her work, and loving all the compliments she’d give us on our own brows, which at the time we were plucking on our own, so any compliment was good! Ha! She was hilarious and even offered to wax our nose hairs, which immediately made us want to be real life friends with her. And with one look at her rave customer reviews online and the before and after photos of her waxing jobs, we knew we had to meet her and let her work her magic on us!
You guys, it’s very rare to meet someone who is equally talented and also so excited about what they do. It’s rare to absolutely love your job and when you exude passion for making others feel beautiful, we’re ALL in. Jessica’s passion as a business owner is infectious and we just love supporting her!
Serene Wax Boutique is gorgeous inside and Jessica’s bubbly, welcoming personality makes any waxing anxiety a person could feel, fully fade away as soon as you get in her chair. Beautiful lighting and plush couches make you feel like you’re at a day spa, but the beauty of it all is you can be out in as little at 15 minutes!
We’ve had a lot of waxing job in our day and may have even attempted to do it ourselves a few times in the past (BAD idea!) and our brows haven’t looked this good in ages! When we say Jessica is magic, it’s not just because she’s so insanely good at what she does, she somehow also makes it painless. We know, we know…how can waxing be painless? But trust us, she waxed our nose hairs and we smiled and laughed our way through it!
We had an absolute ball getting waxed by Jessica and can’t wait to go back. It truly was like we were hanging out with a friend. One who’s really friggen good at waxing and one who just loves being a mama! This woman is beautiful inside and out and is so passionate about the business she’s building. She works hard for her family and loves coming to work everyday to see her clients smiling faces. Nothing brings her more joy that seeing people walk out of her shop happy and confident. To Jess, waxing is her craft and she wants to be the very best at it. And y’all, we’re here to tell you, she IS the best at it!

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in Katy?
I was born in Taiwan, but my family moved to Puerto Rico when I was 12 years old. I have been living in Katy for 2 years and counting!
You’ve got 2 sweet little boys! How old are they and what’s your favorite thing about being a boy mom?
My sons are 8 and 6 years old. My favorite thing about being a boy mom? I love how they are always full of energy and very easy to dress (only dinosaur and car designs), and last but not least…Their stinky feet, haha!
Greatest gift about being a mom?
The greatest gift about being a mom is how they taught me what unconditional love truly means. I have never felt such strong bond and connection of love with anyone until they came along. This love taught me to be strong, caring, loving, and have a lot of patience.
Least favorite mom job? (i.e. packing lunches, dishes, bath time, etc.)
I cannot emphasize how much I dislike waking up early in the morning! In the beginning with my oldest son, I used to wake up at 4AM in the morning to play with him. Now, I have to wake up early to help them prep and get ready for school. People used to warn me about having as much sleep as I can before having kids…Now I understand!
What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about you…
I never thought that I would get ever married or have kids before I turned 30, because the life that I envisioned for myself was to travel all over the worlds and never settle down. However, I was the first one to get married in my family and had my two sons before I was 30.
Favorite local things to do in Katy for fun with the kids?
We enjoy discovering new dessert places together. Our favorite one currently is “Milk Cow”, I recommend trying their ice cream.
Do you have a favorite family friendly restaurant in the area?
Our favorite one currently is called, “Tiger Noodle House”. I recommend trying their soup dumplings and fried rice dish.
What is your go-to activity for yourself for ‘me’ time, pampering or fun?
I love to go get massages and pedicures at Posh Nails & Spa! They have amazing specialty pedicures that includes a hot stone neck & shoulder massage. Sometimes I’ll treat myself to a full body massage there too.
Funniest shortcut/routine for helping you through parenthood?
Shortcut/routine? I just leave everything to my husband, haha!
Best mom hack that makes momming easier?
Honestly, there will never be any hacks that will make momming easier. I give props to all the moms out there because it is truly a lot of sacrifice on your own life when it comes to being a mom!
You’re our favorite waxer and so talented! When did you first know you wanted to pursue the beauty industry and why waxing?
Aww…that truly meant a lot to me! When I was pregnant I knew I wanted to get my esthetician license, because (don’t laugh) I LOVE squeezing out black heads and I always loved watching pimple popping videos! However, I realized that I am NOT the type to sit hours and not be able to socialize and converse with my clients!When I did my first under-arm wax, I still remembered how amazed I was when I saw how fast and clean the skin looked. I love seeing immediate results and knew at that moment, that this is something I want to pursue. My passion is to make all women feel beautiful in a very short amount of time.
When did you open the first Serene Wax in West Houston and when did the Katy location come along?
I opened my very first store in November 2013 in Houston (near the Galleria) and the Katy location recently in October 2018.
Tell us a little about all your waxing offerings at Serene Wax and other products you carry at the store?
We offer full body waxing and brows design services at our boutique. Our most popular services are our signature Brazilian wax and Brow Design Wax. We also carry FarmHouse Fresh body products, which are all 100% organic and do not get tested on animals.
What’s your favorite part about what you do?
My favorite part about what I do is seeing the results and how happy my clients are when leaving my boutique. I was always told by my clients that my techniques are very painless.
What would you say to a mama who’s scared to get waxed?
Honestly, it takes a lot of trust, especially for clients who have been traumatized from other waxing services elsewhere. Therefore, I always tell them to trust me and relax, and know that I have their backs!
What’s the hardest thing for you in being a working mom and business owner?
I never realized how valuable time is until I became a business owner. There will never be enough time in a day for me. I feel like I am always running out of time and that I am not spending enough time with my family. I also feel that I don’t have enough time to do all the things I want to do for my businesses either. My husband had to help me with the chores at home and also take care of our sons. I honestly don’t know what I would do without him, but the mom/wife guilt is the hardest part for me.
You’re so passionate about what you do, what’s one thing you’d tell mamas about choosing Serene Wax Boutique over others in the area?
At Serene, we treat all the clients like family. I want everyone to feel very comfortable when choosing Serene Wax, not have any fears, and trust in us. I am very confident with my Waxing Technique and I want you to feel the difference and experience it.
Best advice for moms who experience the inevitable and dreaded MOM GUILT?
I am probably not the best one to tell you about this, because I have that mom guilt all the time. As long as I know I am giving my best with everything I do everyday, I know my kids will understand my sacrifices and that everything I do, I do it for our family.
Who has most influenced you to be the mom you are today?
I would have to say, my mother. When we moved to Puerto Rico, she only had $5 in her pocket. She worked extremely hard and sacrificed a lot in hope that she could change our lives and she never gave up. The support she gave us as kids, physically and mentally made a huge impact in my life. From her, I learned that nothing is impossible; If I never give anything a chance or try, I will never know the result.
When parenting gets hard, what’s something you tell yourself that gets you through?
I try to do everything as if there isn’t a tomorrow. If things are hard in a day, I just try to remind myself to be grateful that I get to experience this with my kids this lifetime.
Name one thing you hope your kids look back and remember about their childhood and you as their mama?
I hope that they can see how hard I work and although I am busy, I still try my best to make time for them and that I will always be their number #1 supporter.
What would you tell the old “You” before you had kids?
One thing for sure, I wish I knew my passion and how much I love waxing earlier so I can start it sooner! But enjoy life, because everyday is a new experience. Everyday life teaches you something new, good or bad and to enjoy everything as it comes.
What does having a community in motherhood mean to you?
I am truly grateful, because I feel a genuine, strong support at all times. Especially, at times I feel like giving up. To know that there are other moms out there who are going through the same thing gives me a sense of relief/assurance that I am not alone and that nothing is ever right or wrong.
