Meet A Mom: Kara Dyson | Katy Moms
Meet A Mom: Kara Dyson, Owner of Covenant K9 Detection & Certified Narcotics and Explosives Detection Canine Handler

Today’s mom is one badass chick, if we don’t say so ourselves! She’s a Katy single mama of three and her business is one she started straight from her heart and in an effort to help families.

Kara Dyson started her passion project to help families in crisis or who think illegal narcotics may be a problem. She’s the owner Convenant K9 Detection and what makes them different is they’re not law enforcement. Kara’s highly trained and skilled K9 dogs can confidentially and discreetly conduct a presence or absence search of your house, car etc. of the loved one or child suspected of using.
No charges or arrests are made, it’s up to the parent to dispose of and handle their own personal situation. However, Kara’s team does provide a resource sheet compiled of counselors, programs, and talking points from renowned programs in the Katy area to help parents walk this process to healing. Kara says she’s been touched in her own family by addiction and says it’s God who put a passion on her heart to help our community and families.
We got to sit down with Kara to learn more about her business and of course talk all things Katy and mom life.

Tell us about Covenant K9 Detection Services? When did you open the door? And, What services do you offer?

Covenant K9 Detection is 100% a passion project for me to help families dealing with, or suspecting, their kids/loved ones are involved with illegal narcotics.  We opened our doors more than a year ago. We provide residential and business narcotics, weapons and explosives detection services. Our residential services are to help families in crisis or who think their kids/family members might be doing drugs.  Since we are private, discreet and confidential NO ARRESTS or CHARGES are filed.

We want to partner with families so we search for presence or absence of illegal narcotics only. IF something is found, it is up to the family to decide what is done with the find.  Additionally, we have a resource sheet of counselors, treatment facilities, blogs, groups, and talking points to help navigate that encounter with your loved one. We provide confidential search services, one on one with a parent, when your family member is not present.  We want to partner with you without judgement. We have experienced addiction issues affecting loved ones and have a heart for families struggling.

What did you do before starting your business?

I worked in the Environmental Consulting field for most of my career and then took some time off to stay at home and focus completely on being a stay at home momma.

What was the inspiration behind K9 Detection Services?

I have a longtime passion for training and working with dogs and a strong love for relationships.  After taking time off to stay at home and experiencing addiction issues affecting loved ones, it was a natural combination to bring my passions together and assist families wanting to address these hard issues and work to get healthy.

What does it mean to be a Certified Detection Canine Handler? What training do you have?

It means I have successfully completed a series of security classes to become a Certified Private Security Officer through the State of Texas and have successfully completed a Canine Handler Training Course.  In addition, each of my Certified Detection Canine’s and I are Certified as a working team in the areas of narcotics and explosives.

In what scenarios might it be more beneficial to use your services instead of using law enforcement?

Since we are private and non-law enforcement, we do not make arrests or file charges.  You are hiring us to learn information only. It is completely discreet and confidential.

Tell us about your canine co-worker(s)!

My fur babies and working partners are my additional children!
K9 Diesel is my Certified Explosives, Weapons and Vapor Detection Canine.
K9 Zack is my Certified Narcotics Canine.
K9 Maxx is my Narcotics Canine in training.

Best advice for working moms who experience the inevitable and dreaded MOM GUILT?

As a single mom, it’s so easy for us to fill our ’emotional backpack’ with the “I am not giving enough because I work, etc, etc” … the truth is God fills the gaps.  We aren’t meant to be everything to our children. It is not possible. We are perfectly imperfect and can’t possibly meet every need of our children. What we CAN do is do our best and that will look different each day.  But God gave our babies to us… a perfect match. No one will better love and provide and teach our babies better than the match God provided. There are days I apologize because I am less than and there are days I feel like I am nailing this parenting thing.  Do your best and its about the long haul of showing up, support, love, encouragement, authentic honesty and championing your people.

Who has most influenced you to be the mom you are today?

My momma… she passed away a year and half ago from Alzheimers.  She had the most patient, loving and kind heart.

When parenting gets hard, what’s something you tell yourself that gets you through?

That I know there are seasons we go through and nothing lasts forever.  Now that I have seen my ‘bigs’ (as I lovingly refer to my older kiddos) traverse very hard seasons of life… I recognize eventually it all evens out and plays a part into growing and strengthening their story and their character.  Just like my story isn’t perfect… we can’t expect that for theirs either. Pray, stick together and fight for and toward each other.

What would you tell the old “You” before you had kids?

Get lots of sleep to store up…lol.
