Today’s Small Business Saturday is the new Jiu Jitsu studio, Reign! Moon Kim opened his Dojo this Summer with the help of his supportive wife, Claudia. They are local parents of two daughters and Moon is passionate about bringing his love for Jiu Jitsu to Katy! They offer Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from beginner to advances levels. They are family owned and their love for the kids at their dojo is what makes them so special! We met Claudia at one of our events and she was so excited to tell us about Reign and all her and her husband have been building, and we knew we needed to share with you, too!
Aside from Reign, Moon is an educator in Alief and Claudia is an RN in Katy, so their passion for working with people is evident throughout all aspects of their lives. So, check out our interview with Moon below to learn more about his inspiration for opening Reign, the classes they offer, and how he balances it all!
Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in Katy area?
I grew up in Alief, TX, and have been a Houston native since I was 3. I moved to Katy in 2015 with my wonderful wife, Claudia, who works as a registered nurse in Katy.
Do you have kids? What are their ages?
Yes, we have two beautiful daughters, ages 5 and 3.
What did you do before becoming a business owner?
Before we opened Reign Jiu Jitsu, I was and currently still work as an educator at a top-ranked High School in Alief. I am blessed to be able to serve the community I grew up in, and now the community I live in.
My wife is a Registered Nurse, and also helps me with our kids program. Together, we provide a nurturing and safe environment for our kids to learn Jiu Jitsu.
When did you open the door at Reign Jui Jitsu?
We opened Reign Jiu Jitsu on July 13, 2019.
What was the inspiration behind starting Reign?
As I have embarked on this Jiu Jitsu journey, many years ago, I have witnessed many people making positive changes in their life. For example, I have seen people lose weight, go from living a sedentary life style to high performing athletes, better life style choices, kid’s increasing their confidence and also making better life style choices, all while building lifelong friendships. Through my years of Jiu Jitsu training, and my background as a school teacher I feel that I can have this positive impact on our community, here in Katy, as well!
When did your personal love of Jiu Jitsu begin?
My love for jiu jitsu began when I actually realized how it was transforming my life. It started with wanting to learn more about Jiu Jitsu, but I noticed so much more! I was losing weight, getting stronger, meeting good people, improving my diet, having fun,
And most importantly challenging myself to living my life to its full potential.
Tell us more about Reign and the classes that you provide?
We offer Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes that focus on proper self-defense techniques, from beginner level to advanced level. We are family owned and truly are passionate about Jiu Jitsu and its impact on our kids in Katy. We have flexible schedules and conveniently located in Katy. Our classes are offered for children and adults, 4 years and up.
What makes Reign unique to other Dojo’s in the area?
I really can’t say since I have never visited or assessed the other dojos in the area. However, I do utilize my instructional strategies from coaching youth sports, as a physical education teacher, to help teach Jiu Jitsu. Understanding that each individual is unique and that all people do not learn the same, allows me to implement the best teaching strategy for each student. We bring a sense of “UNIQUENESS” because my wife and I have many years of working with children. My wife is a R.N, who has a background working in ER and pediatrics, amongst others, she is truly passionate about caring for people and helping them reach their fullest potential. We truly enjoy positively influencing each child’s life. Therefore, with this unique background and passion for the practice of Jiu jitsu we feel that we are bringing something unique to our community. Come be part of our family!
What’s your favorite thing about being a business owner in the Katy area?
One of my favorite things about being a business owner in Katy is the people of Katy. The people in Katy still believe in family values and quality family time, from eating dinner together at restaurants to riding bikes in the park. Family values are important to me.
Advice for anyone wanting to start their own business?
In Jiu Jitsu, we have a saying “You either win or you learn”. So if you attempt to take a risk and it does not work, you make adjustments and learn from it.
Then I would say to believe in yourself and do not surround yourself with negative people. The negative mindset is very contagious. Focus on the positive. So, take a leap, and go for what you’re passionate for!
How do you balance being a business owner, spouse, and parent?
By being present in each moment in life, helps me balance everything. When I’m with my family, my focus is on them and when I’m teaching a class, my focus is on my instruction… Prioritizing is also very helpful in balancing life and time management. But, I DEFINITELY HAVE TO MAKE DATE NIGHTS with my wife a priority! God knows, she would put ME in an armbar, if I didn’t!
Future plans and dreams for your business?
I plan to continue to grow the school without compromising the quality of instruction. Quality over quantity is what I believe in and is very important to me.
