Small Business Saturday: Wildflower Threads | Katy Moms

Not long ago, Alex Orlando, was a college student. Now she is the proud owner of her own boutique in Old Katy on 3rd Street called Wildflower Threads. She grew up going to boutiques with her Mom and always dreamed about having her own, so she studied business in school, worked at boutiques to learn the business, and is now living that dream! She opened the doors in April of this year and hasn’t looked back. Her merchandise is unique and fun, and she strives to have something for everyone. It’s such a fun place to check out for clothes for yourself and they have a ton of cute gifts! PLUS, you can buy online! We connected with Alex, when we saw her “Mama Knows Best” shirts and knew we had to have them.  So, we sat down with Alex to learn more about her inspiration behind Wildflower Threads, how she follows her Faith in business, her future plans, AND she’s offering an EXCLUSIVE discount for in store and online, so read on, Mamas!

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in the Katy area?

I am originally from Katy. I’ve been here since first grade.

When did open Wildflower Threads and what was the inspiration behind it?

I opened up Wildflower Threads on April 20, 2019. It is a new endeavor, but the dream has been there for as long as I can remember! That’s what I went to college intending to do. I love the unique feel of a boutique compared to a chain store. When I was younger, my mom would take me to boutiques, she would love finding a cute shop even if we went out of town. That’s what initially sparked my dream. I even remember when I was younger thinking of names for the boutique I would one day own. I love fashion trends and using fashion as a vehicle to express your inner self.  The name Wildflower Threads came from the bible verse Luke 12:27-28 “Consider how the wildflowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!” This a beautiful reminder of what our true purpose is, and that our God always provides.

What products do you sell?

I am mostly a women’s clothing boutique with jewelry, shoes, and purses. I also sell giftable items, including but not limited to: candles, beauty products, desk items, party supplies, graphic tees, mugs, cups, etc. I like having a wide range of products so everyone can find something to love.

Have you always been this entrepreneurial and creative?

Yes, I have! I love business. It’s what I studied in college.
For as long as I can remember I have been crafty. In the past I’ve made canvas’, jewelry, and embroidery and sold them on etsy. When I was younger, I would love to dream up new inventions/ideas, draw and craft. I’m of the mindset if you don’t know how to do it, you can learn how to do it. Being able to dream of something and make it become a reality is the most fulfilling to me. We are made in God’s image and I believe that when I create I’m fulfilling my purpose.

What did you do before opening Wildflower Threads?

I was a college student before I opened Wildflower. In college I worked as a gymnastics coach, a babysitter and I worked at a boutique for a while in college to gain experience because I knew that’s what I wanted to do.

Old Katy is such a special place, what made you choose that location for your store?

I knew I wanted an area with culture and with events. That small town feel and being surrounded by other small businesses that are unique and beautiful in their own way is an aspiring environment to be in. The events held in Old Katy are so fun and it warms my heart knowing the community comes together to support each other. I felt a tug in my heart  from God to look in Old Katy for a spot. I am surrounded by amazing local businesses owners that have welcomed me in and have been a true blessing.

How has the Katy community impacted your business?

They have been amazing! They have been so supportive and have helped me grow. I have the most incredible customers. I am in awe of the kindness, love, and support I have received from the Katy community. People who want to write articles about Wildflower, people who want to connect with me on social media and so on! I have been so humbled by this astonishing community and I’m so proud that I am a member of it.

How do you choose the items you want in your boutique and what is your main goal when making those selections?

There are various factors that help me pick out my products. One of course is the style trends and colors that are hot that season. It’s a must. Next is would I even wear this? or would I even purchase this myself or for someone else. To sell something well, you must fully believe in the product. I would love to incorporate products that have a purpose or locally made. I currently have a few products currently that have a purpose and a few that are locally made. My mom goes to market with me as well, so that really helps me expand my thought process and how to appeal to all ages. She has great style too so that helps.

Name one thing that makes your shop unique?

I think my store is unique to Katy in the way its merchandised and in the products I serve. I try to have a little of everything. I try to find at least some clothing for everyone. I try not to put an age limit on my merchandise, I have customers from all ages. I also want you to be comfortable in what your in. You can be beautiful and comfortable at the same time. I want Wildflower to feel homey and comfortable when you come in. For my customers to feel noticed and appreciated. I really strive to glorify God in all that I do and to love the way He loves, and I hope that bleeds throughout my business. I also like to change it up a lot in the store every so many weeks to keep it fresh and new for even my recurring customers. The newest unique feature in Wildflower is that were feathering in extended sizing. Not all boutiques have this blessing, were not going to have a huge selection at first, but were trickling it in till it will be always in the store. So hopefully by 2020 we will have sizes s-xxxl!

What’s your favorite thing about being a small business owner?

There are so many to choose from… being your own boss is liberating and incredible but it is also a lot of responsibility. It’s worth it though. I feel the most me getting to completely choose how the store looks and feels. But the sweetest of joys is getting to connect with the community. Meeting the people and seeing how I can serve them and love on them is just the best. I get to use my talents and ideas to impact someone’s life positively.  It’s a super sweet blessing.

Best advice for someone wanting to take the leap of faith into entrepreneurship or wanting to open their own business?

It’s scarier on the outside seeing the whole list of things you have to do and be capable of doing. But like my Dad always reminded me, the way you eat an elephant is one bite at a time. It’s a silly metaphor, but it’s full of truth. Take one step at a time. Humble yourself and allow others to help you. There is no way I could do this alone, and I still don’t. My family and friends are incredible. They all have talents and ideas that have helped me grow and develop my dream into a reality. They support me and are my biggest cheerleaders. Write your down your business plan and believe in it wholeheartedly. Be flexible and innovative in the way you achieve it but don’t let doubts or failures define your future. It takes sacrifice at times but It’ll be worth it. Trust in God’s timing and providence. Pray a lot!!

When things get hard, what’s one thing you tell yourself to keep going when running this business?

John 10:10 “The enemy comes only to steal, kill and destroy. I have come to give you life and life to the full” Life is full of obstacles and let downs. It’s reminding myself of my purpose and my worth. Not to hold too tightly and control everything but surrender to God and trust Him. It’s a freeing feeling. And I count my blessings. I say okay these things are going wrong or this is hard, but all these good things make this worth it. Just complete faith this is what I was made to do, so I’ll get through it.

Future plans for your business?

So many! In God’s timing! I don’t want to give any secrets away just yet! For now, I am just working on perfecting Wildflower and implementing those extended sizes in the store to make it well rounded for everyone.
