We adore our Meet a Mom feature today! We met Maranda before we knew she had a talent for making macarons and around the time she started her business. She is a local mama of 3 kids and has such a kind heart. Her macaron business is a career that she didn’t expect, it was one she stumbled upon when her daughter asked for a macaron cake for her birthday. Maranda, who had always loved baking, but had never mastered the complex macaron, took a month perfecting them for her daughter’s cake (#mamadetermination). Since then, her family and friends encouraged her to turn her love for baking and, now, her perfect macarons into a business. And, she is killing it and we are so proud of her! So, naturally, her macarons will be at our Moms Night Out event next month! And, if the taste isn’t enough, she has amazing set ups, she can customize the macarons to any theme, and loves to get creative! So, we sat down with Maranda to learn more about how she’s juggling this new booming small business with 3 kids and all about mom life! And, make sure to read to the end for a special KMN deal!
Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in the Katy area?
Houston born and raised! I grew up in the Tomball/Cypress area but moved out to Katy after
meeting my husband.
How many kiddos do you have and how old are they?
We have 3 amazing little humans, 13- Felipe, 5- Julianna, and Mila-1 year.
What’s your favorite thing about raising a family in Katy?
There are so many wonderful things about Katy. I feel like Katy is largely designed with families and children in mind! We have the small town feel, but amenities of a huge city.
Least favorite mom job? (i.e. packing lunches, dishes, bath time, etc.)
Laundry. I loath every step of laundry.
Best mom hack that makes life easier?
This may not really be a “hack” but it will make your life easier! Ask for help when you need it, accept help when its offered! If it makes your life even the slightest bit easier, everyone wins, especially mom!
What are your favorite local things to do in Katy? (with kiddos or just for mom!)
My favorite thing to do with kiddos is explore coffee shops that have play areas for littles! My kids love play places but I secretly hate them – coffee shops that include a children’s area gives us the best of both worlds!
We’re big on self-care for moms, as hard as it is to find the time, what’s something you do just for yourself?
I really love getting my nails done, I always feel more confident when I know my hands and toes look beautiful so I try to get away at least every 3 weeks to get them done.
One thing people would be surprised to know about you…
While I love baking, I’ve never liked to cook! I grew up in a family full of chefs so I definitely stuck out like a sore thumb in that sense.
Tell us about Bombshell Macarons! When did you start selling macarons?
I started Bombshell Macarons a little over 6 months ago after some persistent nudging from friends and family to turn my passion into a business!
What was the inspiration behind starting this business?
Honestly, I never knew what I wanted to pursue as a career growing up or even in my 20’s. I never found passion in anything specific so once I had children, I was more than happy to focus solely on raising them. Once I discovered my love (possible obsession) for baking macarons, I knew I finally found my passion. It was really important for me to show my children that no matter what age you find your dream, you wholeheartedly need to make it a reality.
How did you discover your talent in making macarons?
I attempted to make macarons a few times over the years but failed miserably more times than I’d like to admit! But my daughter really wanted to make a macaron cake for her birthday so I was determined to crack the macaron code. It took me a month of baking macarons daily before I felt like really understood these complex little treats. I watched youtube tutorials for hours at a time, researched recipes and techniques, and taught myself by trial and error. (see, obsession/passion!)
Have you always had a love for baking?
Yes! Some of my favorite childhood memories are baking with my mom and grandmothers. I have a HUGE sweet tooth so
What did you do before starting Bombshell Macarons?
I used to work in accounts receivables for a water company but left to stay home with our kids after having out youngest, Mila.
How do you juggle your business, being a wife, and a mama? And, do you experience the dreaded “Mom Guilt”? How do you cope, if so?
Its not easy, nor does it come quickly. It was a rough transition going from a stay at home mom to small business owner, and I’m definitely still learning. The biggest thing I’ve learned is to set boundaries to preserve time for my kids, my husband, and myself. In the beginning, a new business is like having a baby, it needs constant attention, its real expensive, its an emotional rollercoaster.. the similarities are seemingly endless! I am trying to give myself the same grace as when I was navigating the transition into new mommy-hood.
Who has most influenced you to be the mom you are today?
My mom. She’s such an amazing woman and mother. It is so cheesy, but she really is my best friend and I aspire to be just half the mother she is. She’s also a small business owner and has been since I was a small child. Now I not only turn to her for parenting advice, but for business advice as well!
When parenting gets hard, what’s something you tell yourself that gets you through?
I try and ask myself “will this matter next week? In 6 month? A year?” I try to let go and move on from things that wont matter in the near future.
What are your future plans for Bombshell Macarons?
My ultimate dream is to have a Bombshell Macaron truck! Like a food truck, but just macs!
Any specials, sales, or deals our moms can look out for?
Yep! All orders placed in the month of November that mention KMN will get 20% off.
