Today we’re thrilled to feature a mama who has made it her business to uplift, encourage, and inspire others. She’s one of those mamas you meet and she makes you feel like you’re the most important person in the room, like you’ve been friends forever. She’s got the warmest heart and she’s as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. Today we’re giving the spotlight to the amazing Sky Houston.

Sky Houston is a Radio Professional and an Afternoon Host on Majic 102./KMJQ-FM in Houston. She travels professionally to national conferences as a moderator and public speaker, and is a TV and Voiceover Talent with Pastorini and Bosni. Sky’s voice is heard nationally and internationally! As a voice over talent, she is heard daily in South Africa as part of an international broadcast! Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in Houston?

I’m a TEXAS Girl! Born in San Antonio, RAISED in Austin, migrated to Houston for college!

You’re a mama! How many kiddos do you have and how old are they?

I have one, an uber talented and smart 7-yr old son named Kenzo!

What’s your favorite thing about raising a family in the Houston area?

It’s a gateway to the WORLD! From Houston we can take a journey to anywhere, simply by visiting a different area of the city! This city inspires me. When my son was born, I created a children’s book series entitled “Kenzo the International Kid”. It is an ode to one of my childhood favorites (Reading Rainbow) and my way of allowing my son and other kids to explore and learn the world outside of their window – cultures, relationships, religions, differences, similarities etc. through a book! That’s what it’s like living in Houston – an exploration!

Greatest gift about being a mom?

I didn’t truly learn myself until I became a mom. Seriously. I didn’t know my own look, quirky little gestures etc. until I saw them in my son! Like the way I squint my eyes and nose when I don’t agree with something – he does it. The way my cheeks dimple when I’m extremely enamored with something – he does it. Oh and the attitude I can get when things do not go my way or as planned, in his little temperament he does it! He also shows me the BEST IN ME! The way I love God, he loves Christ! Even at 7, he’s unapologetically going after that relationship. I couldn’t ask for much more than my child seeking God’s Heart because that truly is my heart. Before my entertainment life, before my social life it’s that God life for me!

Least favorite mom job? (i.e. packing lunches, dishes, bath time, etc.)

Ironing clothes!! One day I told a friend that I hated ironing, her reply was “Do people still do that!” ha!

One thing people would be surprised to know about you…

I love READING and listening to AUDIO BOOKS! I could sit on the couch with books and NEVER turn on a television, ever!

Favorite local things to do in Houston? (With kiddos or just for mom!)

We LOVE fellowshipping with friends! We don’t have a big family, and our schedule stays busy – so anytime we get to visit a friend’s house for a play date (where the kids play and leave us MOMS ALONE to catch up on LIFE), that’s a good night.

Do you have a favorite family friendly restaurant in the area?

WE LOVE PIZZA!! And discovered Hungry Howie’s in Katy (6133 N. Fry Rd) O-M-G all of the different flavors and that stuffed crust has to be a sin!

Best mom hack that makes your life easier?

HAVE A VILLAGE!! I’m the epitome of independent which is sooo oxy-moronic if you are a mom, because NO ONE BUT NO ONE makes it out here alone! My Mom Hack is quite frankly realizing that I simply cannot do it alone and that it’s O-K to lean on other family members and trusted friends in my church community to help out when I need anything from a 2-hr sitter, or some extra kids to attend an event with mommy if my son has to tag along, so that he isn’t by himself. It was hard to rely on other people in the beginning, but it’s wayyyy more profitable for me to allow others to be a blessing to me in that way.

Tell us about your all you do outside of being a mama!

What are some of your passions outside of motherhood?

I’m a women’s social event producer and Creator of the GOOD MOM, BAD MOM Comedy Experience- Houston which spotlights everyday moms in a standup comedy experience (spring 2020) – because as moms,  if we can’t laugh at life and with each other, who can we do it with!
I’m also so passionate about helping women GET CONFIDENT! Self-esteem and confidence is an “inside” job, but even the most well-meaning moms fall short. But on those days, I like to help women regain focus, drive and helps them RENEW their minds through my online “She’s A Masterpiece: HOW TO BUILD CONFIDENCE” course. Do you experience mom guilt? If so, how do you deal?

NEVER!! OK, I lied. ABSOLUTELY!! I suffered so badly this past weekend because I hosted an ALL-DAY conference. I was gone before dawn meaning before my kid even opened his eyes and didn’t make it back home until it was DARK. To make up for being an “unseen mom” from DAWN-to-DUSK, I bribed my kid’s love back by taking him to Dave & Busters until 10pm that night! Hey, sometimes I spend money to make up for my shortcomings and sometimes I just let it ride, because I’m only doing what it takes to create the life I want for myself and others.

How important is it for you to have a passion outside of being a mother?

Listen, it is sooo important. YOU WILL DIE giving, giving, giving of yourself and no replenishing or doing something that puts something back into your OWN RESERVE TANK.
Self Care and Pursuit of your own passions in the midst of everything else is Critical. I heard a friend of mine say that “Self Love is So Gangsta. So I’m working on my own and helping other moms work on our G-card!

Who has most influenced you to be the mom you are today?

Claire Huxtable!! Period! She was brilliant, bright and ALWAYS kept her calm! She got respect, love and admiration from her Husband, Children and THEIR friends alike! I know she’s just a tv character, but seeing that career woman be in charge of her interactions, her relationships etc. inspires me!

When parenting gets hard, what’s something you tell yourself that gets you through?

Do what you have to do until you can do what you want to do as a mom. I tell my son this for his little life and I use it as a mantra for mine.

Name one thing you hope your kids look back and remember about their childhood and you as their mama?

That I supported their WHOLE being and Loved them as Christ loved them. I was patient and kind (still in progress) but just as God gives me grace, I extend that to my child. And that I was into gaining knowledge and understanding 360 and that he or they should as well.

What would you tell the old “You” before you had kids?

SAVE SOME MONEY!! GET SOME INVESTMENTS because life is EXPENSIVE!! And waits for NO MAN (or Woman).

We are all about community, as are you! What does having a mom tribe mean to you?

It goes back to my village mentality. PEOPLE are valuable, and add value to YOUR life, so add value to PEOPLE!
