Small Business Feature: Sweet & Sassy Katy | Katy Moms
Featuring Sweet & Sassy Katy & Owners Esther & Ola Adisa

We had the pleasure of meeting this business owner and experiencing all the beautiful things her business has to offer in February when Audrey’s daughter turned six and decided she wanted her ears pierced! We’d been so excited to welcome this business to Katy, hearing wonderful things about the other locations in Houston, and Natalie’s daughter Harper decided she needed to join in on the fun.
We were met with the most fun. joyful open arms by Eshter the owner and her entire staff. Mamas, you know when you walk inside a business and immediately feel like ‘these are my people?’ That’s how we felt stepping into Sweet & Sassy.

This business is a mother/daughter and little girls dream. From ear piercing, to mani/pedis, to a stage fit for any princess, we could have spent all day there. In fact, our girls have requested their birthday party be here every year!
It’s just a fun place where a girl can be a girl! Their kid salon, spa, and celebration space offer everything you could want for a party. From getting your hair done to pampering yourself to birthday parties, their sweet, friendly team can provide an unforgettable experience. They cater to the kids and it shows!
From the moment you walk through the doors of the store, you will be treated like a princess. Esther the owner is often seen bopping around with her joyful demeanor and lights up the room. It’s just so stinking fun in there!
We got to sit down with Esther to learn more about her business, what keeps her inspired, and her favorite thing about being a business owner in Katy.
Enjoy our full interview below!

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in the Katy area?

I am from Edmond, Oklahoma and I love Katy because it reminds me so much of home! I have lived in Katy since summer of 2012. It will be eight years this June!

You’re a mama! How old are your kiddos?

Yes, blessed mother of two…well 3.  It’s always a hard question for me to answer but that’s a whole other platform but we’ll keep that part just between us…God did bless me with 3 beautiful children. Ezra would’ve been 8 this year, Ariel is 6 going on sweet 16 (you can put that in there lol) and my sweet Levi will be 3 on April 6th (yay Spiderman birthday loading!! I haven’t ordered a thing with everything going on)

What did you do before opening your business?

I was an elementary school teacher, did some substitute teaching while in transition and I also worked at my daughter’s preschool as the Bridge teacher when I was pregnant.

When did you officially open the doors of Sweet & Sassy and was it a smooth road getting to your open date?

Saturday, March 9th, 2019.  You know what they say-nothing in life comes easy but by the grace of God, we made it and here we are about to celebrate our one-year anniversary!  You know with any new building, you have to be patient in working with the bank, the contractor, the landlord and waiting on the fire marshal, etc. but it was all worth it and it makes me appreciate suite 210 even more.

Tell us a little about your business and the inspiration behind it!

Sweet & Sassy is your one stop shop for little girls and boys because we do everything from ear piercings, to haircuts & specialty updo’s, to spa services and birthday parties with the addition of our hot pink limo.  The inspiration behind it is kids, I have always enjoyed working with and engaging with them!! As a former school teacher and now mother, it feels great to come to work and see their smiling faces, as they walk in.  I’ve always loved planning, hosting, and throwing birthday parties so that was another inspiration. It just makes my day to see returning customers who race in there ready for their next awesome experience, some who are just stopping by to say hello or give a hug and even the first time customers who are eager to know who we are and what we do.

What makes your business unique?

I feel like what makes my business unique is that we are the only one in this area & surrounding area that caters to, pampers and offers the royal treatment to our little customers and they leave with a wow customer service experience.  It can be from an ear-piercing service with a princess or fairy to an amazing birthday party.  We always try to go above and beyond to provide magical moments for all our customers.

If you could describe your business in just three words, what would they be?

Uplifting, Delightful & Sparkling

What drew you to the Sweet & Sassy franchise and why did you choose this community to open?

It all started with Facebook!! One of the moms I went to college with took her daughter there and I saw the picture and post.  At the time, I didn’t even know there were other locations here.  I’ve always loved working with kids as long as I could remember and it’s just me; it’s where I am the most comfortable.  I like getting my hair, nails and makeup done so I thought it would be a great fit for me as well!  I chose this community because this is where I call home and what better place to open a small business than in your very own community.

You have so many offerings- what are some of your favorite packages you offer?

My #1 is the Ultimate Spa Package because you can get your hair done in a sweet & sassy up-do, a facial, a mani pedi and two make your own’s (MYO) to take home!!  This is a perfect package for a first timer who is coming in to celebrate her birthday with mommy and daddy.
My second would be the Girls Rock birthday party because you get the chance to showcase your talents as the Pop Star that you are in front of your friends and family!!

We’re giant advocates for supporting local! Tell us how the community has gotten you where you are now.

First off, I would just like to thank all the Katy and Houston moms, out of state and out of the country moms who have been so supportive and understanding with us as a new business in the Katy-Fulshear area.  Whether it has been by word of mouth, posting on social media via our Facebook or Instagram page, sharing photos and experiences on their personal page/stories and not just ours, Google reviews, referrals on the mom blogs, supporting our spring and summer camps by signing their child up and having them bring a friend, booking a salon, spa, birthday party and limo service through us, etc. and buying gift certificates or retail from us.  We just appreciate all our new, returning and loyal customers who have trusted us time and time again with their children.  My staff and I are truly appreciative of your support.

What’s your favorite thing about being a business owner?

Meeting the families and making connections with them as they come in.  I like to hear about their everyday struggles and triumphs that come with parenting to the next specialty up-do for their daddy daughter dance or upcoming plans for their birthday party with us.  I love meeting new people and to see returning customers just gives me so much joy!  Also, just helping them out with the type of service or gift they’re looking to get, when they walk in or call over the phone.

Future plans for your business?

I hope to continue to grow and succeed in the Katy-Fulshear area and be the best party store, kids’ salon and spa for the little ones; delivering wow customer services everyday to each customer that walks in.  I want my business to continue to thrive as a fun and happy place to work for young ladies in high school that lead the way as our party coordinators for all our birthday parties.  Along with the stylists, they make the store and represent our brand.  We’re so thankful to them as well.

Best advice for anyone wanting to open their own business?

Pray.  Be patient.  Always continue to keep God first in everything, take care of your family and make sure they are priority and take care of yourself as well.  Try and make sure you do something for yourself as often as you can to alleviate the stress that comes with a new business and serve others.

Hardest thing about being a business owner?

Satisfying customer’s demands while still being profitable.

What’s one thing you’d like to go back and tell yourself before you launched into entrepreneurship?

The value of hiring the right employees to represent your brand and your business.

How do you balance being a business owner and your busy family life?

I’m thankful that I have such a supporting family-I don’t know how I’d manage without my mom and husband.  I also have a good team at work that holds down the fort so I’m able to squeeze in an off day here and there. I can bring my daughter in with me after school so that helps too and she’s such a hard worker!  To be completely honest, it’s still a work in progress and I just try and spend as much quality time as I can with my supportive spouse and my encouraging little ones.  Prioritizing is key!
