Meet a Mom: Claire Thom, Claire Thom Photography
Today we are featuring Claire, a Scottish born local Mum of 2 kiddos and an incredibly talented photographer. Claire was featured in our Fall 2020 Guide to Photographers because we believe she is one of the best in Katy. She is one of the best, not just because she is uber-talented, but also because as a mom herself, she can thrive on the high energy and chaos that family photography can bring or the unpredictability of a newborn session. Plus, she understands that moms want to cherish and hang onto every stage of motherhood, so she wants to give that to you in photographs. Claire specializes in family and newborn lifestyle sessions. She is currently booking kids portrait minis and Fall family sessions.
We sat down with Claire to talk to her about her passion for photography, when that passion became a career, and all things mom life!
Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in the Katy area?
I am from Aberdeen in Scotland, and have lived in Katy for 2.5 years
What’s your favorite thing about raising your family in Katy?
Favourite thing is the amazing schools, and the endless sporting opportunities it gives them.
How many kiddos do you have and how old are they?
Two Kids Sophie (10) and Callum (8). 15.5 months between them so they are very close
Least favorite mom job? (i.e. packing lunches, dishes, bath time, etc.)
Would have to be ironing! My husband can confirm this – so he has to wear a lot of clothes that don’t need ironed!
Best mom hack that makes life easier?
Kroger click and collect shopping!
What are your favorite local things to do in Katy? (with kiddos or just for mom!)
As a family we love visiting parks, and have recently started camping. Which I did not think I would enjoy, but actually love it.
My son loves baseball and has recently joined Katy Pony and my daughter loves horse riding, and does it at West Houston Hunter Jumpers.
I love spending time with friends.
We’re big on self-care for moms, as hard as it is to find the time, what’s something you do just or yourself?
I work out most days at VillaSport! Love the classes!
One thing people would be surprised to know about you…
I am terrified of birds.
How long have you been a photographer and have you always had an eye for it?
I have always loved photography, and have been designated family / friends photographer since I was a kid. I got my first DSLR after Sophie was born, and started doing courses from there.
Tell us about your photography business and when you decided to pursue it outside of just being a passion?
I decided to pursue it out with a passion once both kids were in school. I wanted others to have beautiful photos to display in their homes.
What did you do before starting your business?
Before I had kids I was in HR for an Oil and Gas company. Then I was a stay at home mum.
What are your areas of specialty? And, what is personally your favorite type of session?
I specialize in family and newborn lifestyle sessions. I love both for different reasons, my newborn sessions are calm and quiet and feel like a Sunday morning. My family sessions are usually a bit more energetic and full of fun.
How has being a mama yourself shaped you as a business owner and photographer?
Being a Mum has made me a family photographer, because I know that I want to hold onto my kids at each stage and I want to give that to others. To provide beautiful photos that they can cherish.
How do you balance being a “mum” (as the Scottish say!), wife, and business owner? Do you experience the dreaded mom guilt! If so, how do you cope?
I do feel guilty when I miss things that the kids are involved in because I am working, however, I know that they understand that this business is something I am passionate about, and I want both of them to follow their passions.
When parenting gets hard, what’s something you tell yourself that gets you through?
My friend who has an older child told me once that each stage is difficult, and it changes so quickly so don’t worry it will pass… but then you will have something else to worry about! So I just remind myself that this is just a stage!
