Have you heard of floatation therapy? How about cyrotherapy? Mamas, we have been so intrigued by these therapy options and all the services that FLOATspa Katy has to offer, so we knew we needed to learn more! FLOATspa Katy opened in Sept. 2019 and is owned and operated by a husband wife team (also parents to 2 kiddos) Kenzie and Mike Malkemes. Mike & Kenzie also started and run an inner city ministry here in Houston called Generation One. They were already busy with their full time ministry, but after trying a FLOATspa on an anniversary trip and falling in love, they knew they needed to take the leap and bring one to Katy. They know that people are over stressed, over worked and are struggling physically, mentally and emotionally, and that these therapies they offer work! Their goal is to bring several therapies under 1 roof in a high end Spa setting to help with your Relaxation & Recovery. All of the therapies work well individually but can be combined to increase the physical and mental health benefits! They offer massage therapy, floatation therapy, whole body cryotherapy, target cryotherapy, infrared sauna, hydromassage, compression therapy and BrainTap.

Read our interview below to learn more about how these therapies can help you, what they entail, and make sure to read to the end to see their December special going on now!

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in the Katy/Houston area?

Mike grew up in League City Texas. Kenzie is from Myrtle Beach SC, but has lived in Houston for almost 15 years. Mike started an inner city ministry, Generation One www.generationone.net and Kenzie moved here to help him then they started dating and got married. They met doing Katrina relief work in Mississippi.

Are you also a parent? How old are your kiddos?

Yes. 18 and 7.

Tell us about FLOATspa and the services that you offer!

The goal is to bring several therapies under 1 roof in a high end Spa setting to help with your Relaxation & Recovery. All of our therapies work well individually but can be combined to increase the physical and mental health benefits! We offer massage therapy, floatation therapy, whole body cryotherapy, target cryotherapy, infrared sauna, hydromassage, compression therapy and BrainTap.

What was the inspiration behind starting FLOATspa and when did you open up the doors?

We were first introduced to floatation therapy when we were on an anniversary trip in Hot Springs Arkansas. We were googling things to do and FLOATspa came up. We didn’t know what it was so we called to check them out and booked appointments. Mike ended up going there every day while we were in town and then the last day he started asking the owner about franchising. I thought he was crazy because we have our full time ministry and I couldn’t see how we would make it work. We wanted to bring these amazing therapies to Katy and help as many people as we can because we know that people are over stressed, over worked and are struggling physically, mentally and emotionally.  We opened our doors officially in September 2019.

Tell us about Floatation Therapy, what does this therapy entail and what are the benefits?

Floatation Therapy is awesome! You come in, change into a comfy robe and slippers, shower and then head into a Pod or Cabin to float. This gives your body and mind the space to let go, relax and rest. The solution in the tanks is water and about 1,000 pounds of medical grade Epsom Salt and it’s heated to skin temperature. Outside of being in space, this is the only way to free your body from the forces of gravity that pull on your musculoskeletal and nervous systems. You’ll experience deep levels of relaxation, relieve pain, muscle recovery and improve your sleep while in this state. Each float session gets better as the relief and benefits build on themselves each time! The mind actually learns how to relax during the sessions so the more floats you get under your belt the deeper the relaxation you will experience. We live in the world of maximum, continuous input. It is so good for us to remove all of that and just be still and quiet.

What about cryotherapy? How cold are we talking and what are the benefits of this therapy?

So we are talking COLD 😊 Sessions range from -168F t0 -220F! This cold air is used to lower the temperature of your skin surface to about 40 degrees F and then hold it there for 2-3 minutes. When this happens, the brain sends the body into survival mode. This causes blood to pull from your extremities to your core where your blood is enriched with nutrients, oxygen and enzymes. When your body starts to warm back up, this nutrient rich blood is pushed back to your extremities. This newly enriched blood does a lot of amazing things that rejuvenate the body at a cellular level. It helps with inflammation, joint pain, muscle recovery and so much more!

We chose to go with the CRYO Arctic chamber because it is the only true WHOLE body cryotherapy in the industry because you are fully enclosed. You never come in direct contact with the cryogenic gases only breathable air so we believe it is the safest way to do Cryotherapy!

What’s your main goal when treating your customers?

Our goal is to listen to connect with each Client personally and help them Relax & Recover. We love when Clients share what they are struggling with – physically or mentally- or what they are in need of and coming up with the best combination of therapies/treatments for them. Seeing people’s faces and demeanor change from when they walk in to when they are checking it is so amazing and encourages us so much! We have clients that come in and can barely move a certain party of their body because of injury or disease and we help them feel better. We also have clients that come in because they are highly stressed or struggling with anxiety and depression and we help them feel better. We also have clients that just want to relax and get away for a little while.

What are some of the reasons/ailments a person might come see you and have they seen improvements by using your services?

Any kind of physical pain or injury. Clients leave with less or even no pain, better range of motion and relief! It may take just 1 visit or it may be a more ongoing thing depending on what the Client is struggling with.

Athletes that want to speed up their recovery and enhance their performance. They range from student athletes to professional Body Builders, MMA Figthers and beginner to competitive Cross fitters and everyone in between!

Anxiety and Depression. Clients leave feeling centered, calm and recharged. They sleep better which also improves their mental health.

We have a Client that struggles with rage. When he feels like things are becoming too much for him, or like he might blow up, he comes in and Floats and sometimes adds some other services and then he leaves like a new person. It’s really awesome to see!

Friends/Families/Coworkers that just want to enjoy some relaxation together. They book appointments together or even Private Parties which are a blast.

How quickly do you feel the effects and how long do they last?

Totally depends on the Client, the therapy or combination and the reason they’ve come in. But we never have anyone leave feeling the same way they came in!

What is your personal favorite therapy or service you provide? Why?

Oh gosh that’s hard. I love Whole Body Cryotherapy because it’s fast and so effective and I feel so energized after a session. I love the Infrared Sauna because it feels so good to sweat and detox and it also helps with some pain I have and it also boosts my mood. I LOVE getting a good massage and especially when I can combine it with the sauna and or a float as they work together so well for the ultimate Relaxation & Recovery!

Future plans for FLOATspa?

We are the Master Franchise for the Greater Houston area so we would love to help some other folks open some Spas to bring the Relaxation & Recovery to their areas!
