Today’s Meet a Mom feature is Shawntel Webster, the wonder woman mama behind Beauty Topix, better known locally as the Makeup Bus! Yes, Shawntel brings the beauty, the hair, the makeup, to YOU. Being mobile for her busy mama clients who can easily just step outside their front door and onto the bus for a makeover has made her wildly successful across Houston. From Katy, to Cypress, to The Heights, and beyond, Shawntel has been making women feel their best for years.
Shawntel is a talented makeup and hair stylist and has a heart of gold! I had the chance to sit in her chair last month and now cannot recommend her enough. Not only did she make me look and feel so beautiful, she treated me like a life long friend and we had the best mama convos that made my heart so happy. Most of all she’s so confident and talented in her work. It’s truly an art.
This mama is just as beautiful on the inside as the outside and she’d love to help make you over for your next event, date night, wedding, or even provide beauty services for birthday parties and other celebrations! See her full list of services on her website and enjoy the interview and photos of her work below. She is the real deal, mamas!
Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in the Katy?
I am originally from Louisiana and I was born on a military base. I was an Army brat and lived all over the U.S. I’ve been in the area for about 16 years now.
You’re a mama to three! How old are your kiddos?
My kids are 14, 15, and 18.
What’s the biggest gift about being a mom?
Creating life in your body and then watching these tiny humans grow up into the most amazing people.
One thing people would be surprised to know about you…
I actually love to go to the gun range and shoot. Most people would be surprised by that because I am quite a girly girl.
Favorite local things to do in the Houston area?
I enjoy trying new restaurants and going thrift shopping. I love a good bargain.
What is your go-to activity for yourself for pampering or for fun?
I firmly believe in having a self care day. Getting a facial and a massage can make a huge difference in your overall well being.
Best mom hack that makes life easier?
My favorite mom hack is so simple. Buy a crockpot! While you’re busy all day something delicious is simmering away at home.
Tell us about your background in beauty and your passion for helping women feel their best!
I became interested in makeup and skincare at a very young age thanks to my beautiful mother. She had a simple routine but she always looked so stunning to me. I’ve been lucky enough to work for great brands like MAC and Urban Decay where I was able to hone my skills and build strong relationships. We as women have a tendency to be overly critical of ourselves so my goal is to enhance our natural beauty.
You come from the corporate world, too but decided to launch your business- tell us about that process and joys of working for yourself!
Working in the corporate world is great for some but it’s not what I was passionate about. I was finally ready to take the plunge and start my own business because I saw a real need for what I had to offer. It was so stressful but completely worth it! I wake up every morning with a smile on my face because I truly love what I do. I have the flexibility to be there for my kids whenever they need me.
What’s one thing that makes your business unique?
My mobile three chair salon can go practically anywhere. It truly is convenient luxury. My team and I provide our guests with amazing service. My main goal is to make sure that everyone leaves with a smile and of course we share a ton of laughs together. Always a great time on the bus!
How important is being mobile to your clients?
My clients are typically busy moms so my service allows them the opportunity to relax and skip the traffic. They don’t need to stress about finding a babysitter either. Simply walk out the front door and an amazing experience is waiting for you.
You do a lot of weddings, but also help mamas for date nights. Is there anything you don’t do, but might get into in the future?
The future possibilities are always on my mind. We are definitely in the process of expanding. Amazing things will be happening soon so stay tuned.
Best beauty advice for moms?
Get a good nights sleep. Sleep on a silk or satin pillow case and use a night cream and please use a sunscreen with a good SPF everyday.
Best advice for working moms who experience the inevitable and dreaded MOM GUILT?
Remind yourself that you are doing this so they can have the best life possible. Take pride in the choice you’ve made to help support your family. Know that one day they will truly understand and have nothing but respect and love for the sacrifices you made for them.
What would you tell the old “You” before you had kids?
I would say don’t take yourself so seriously all the time and laugh more. Find something to be grateful for every single day no matter how small it may seem.
